Job Description: We are looking for a compassionate, caring, patient person, with an upbeat attitude and strong interpersonal and communication skills. The IBSW will provide support to women, their partner and families with continuous emotional support, physical comfort and assistance in obtaining information before, during or after childbirth. Working 7.5-hour shifts, some overtime may be required. The IBSW will provide specific cultural practices that the birthing mother and/or partner wish to incorporate into their birthing experience. Will act as a liaison to Elders, Knowledge Keepers and Traditional Healers as desired; Will provide and develop culturally appropriate birth plan, model culturally safe practices and work alongside nurses, physicians, and midwives during prenatal birth and early post-partum periods.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing Patient Care by providing input into women’s care plan & advocate for the women’s birth plans;
  • Facilitate translation if required;
  • Liaison with staff to connect patient with cultural, social or community supports as appropriate;
  • Facilitate traditional birthing practices & ceremonies as desired by the patient;
  • Document in the client’s medicine record as required;
  • Actively participate in team rounds and handover;
  • Providing Education by delivering basic prenatal education to hospitalized women;
  • Participate on various Maternal Services Committees in order to represent the needs of Indigenous women;
  • Data collection
  • Utilize the First Nations & Metis Health Services as personal & professional support as you support Indigenous families & help create a culturally responsive workplace;

Education

  • Minimum Grade 12

Other Education and Training

  • Certificate in Birth Doula Studies Program or wiling to obtain certification

Experience

  • Experience working with First Nations communities is an asset

Licenses

  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License

Competencies

  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of office equipment

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of Physiology of birth & basic Medical Terminology is an asset
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to speak/understand Cree is an asset
