Indigenous Support Worker

POSITION SUMMARY  

The Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre is hiring an Indigenous Support Worker to join our team. This person will play a key role in building and maintaining community relationships, informing agency policy and practice, and providing immediate crisis response and support services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. This crisis response may be in person at the KSACC office, or it may be phone based or via hospital accompaniment to those survivors wishing to access medical or forensic exams at Royal Inland Hospital. The overarching goal of the position is work toward more accessible, relevant services for Indigenous folks in our community.  This position is based out of KSACC’s Kamloops office with some flexibility to work remotely/offsite.

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION 

This can be a part-time (16-24 hours/week) or full-time (32 hours/week) position, depending on the successful candidate's preferences and capacity. The position includes extended health and dental benefits, but specifics will depend on the number of hours/week chosen. Compensation for this position is $31.80/hour, with regular increases as funding permits.  

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

• Provide culturally safe support to survivors at KSACC,  the hospital, over the phone and at other community agencies (as requested). 

• Accompany survivors to Royal Inland Hospital for medical and forensic exams when on shift.  

• Conduct referrals to and/or advocacy with other community service providers, as necessary. 

• Take the lead on building external relationships with Indigenous communities and Indigenous serving agencies; Participate in community events and committees, as appropriate. 

• Integrate local knowledge, community-identified needs, current research, and culturally relevant supports into policy and programming for clients, staff and wider community. 

• Maintain statistics and participate in program evaluations that adhere to funder and agency requirements.  

• Participate in staff meetings, job evaluation and other Agency-related forms of supervision and participation as .  

• Perform other related duties as required by the Agency Coordinator and Crisis Response Coordinator. 

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS 

• Post-secondary education in a relevant field: Human Services Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree (women’s or gender studies, Indigenous studies, social work, sociology, psychology), or equivalent combination of experience and education   
• Experience working with Indigenous folks, communities and organizations 
• Experience working (or volunteering) in crisis or highly sensitive contexts 
• Experience developing community relationships, policy and/or programming is an asset 
• Satisfactory completion of a criminal record check with vulnerable populations 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ASSETS  

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Secwépemc history, traditions, and ways of being;
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of intersectional feminist practice; 
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of sexualized violence;  
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of trauma-informed practice; 
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous contexts, cultures, and decolonial practice; 
• Capacity to work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds;  
• Excellent communication skills (written and oral);  
• Demonstrated capacity to adhere to privacy and confidentiality legislation and guidelines; 
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
