The Native American Advisor provides assistance to Native American students to develop strong academic skills and cultural awareness in order to ensure a positive educational experience.
This position is grant-funded under the Title VI Indian Education and Johnson O’Malley Indian Education grants. Continuing employment is dependent upon grant funding.
Encourage and educate students about Native American culture and values in efforts to increase self-esteem and cultural pride.
Promotes achievement and positive behavior of all Native American students and recognizes good grades, attendance, behavior, attitude, and participation by Native American students.
Provides individual academic assistance to Native American students by collaborating with the students’ teachers.
Meets with teachers to coordinate information on student status and services provided for eligible Native American students.
Monitors students at-risk for academic, behavioral, alternative education, and health care and makes necessary referrals.
Accepts referrals from school counselors, teachers, nurses, staff, principals, and parents who identify Native American students who need assistance.
Assist students in developing solutions for obstacles relating to school achievement and/or behavior.
Collects student eligibility data for certification and/or financial assistance and maintains the appropriate student records in the prescribed format for the NASS Office.
Assists students with academic or personal issues through student/parent conferences, home visits, district staff, and resource referrals to affect their solution.
Monitors Title VI and JOM students' attendance records and grades.
Disseminates information to parents, teachers, and administrators of assigned schools.
Maintains a daily schedule of assigned schools and works with students’ daily schedules
Acts as a liaison between students, parents, families and teachers, administrators, and the NASS office.
Organizes patrons of target schools to promote parental involvement in the school program.
Attends all mandatory Native American Student Services events, staff meetings, professional development trainings, and other job-related related deemed necessary by the Director of NASS.
Works productively and professionally as an essential member of the NASS team and their assigned school building team.
Attends Parent Advisory Council meetings as requested and serves on committees as required
Performs other duties as assigned.
