About the office

The Indigenous Education Office, situated within the Enabling Directorate, is dedicated to supporting the academic success and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across all campuses.

Special Requirements

This position is a genuine occupational qualification, under s50 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA) and is open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people only.

To be eligible for this position, you must provide a statement and supporting documentation that addresses how you meet each of the following criteria for Aboriginality:

i. be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; and

ii. identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and

iii. be accepted as such by the community in which they live or have lived.

The University may request further information from applicants as required. Supporting documentation may include, but is not limited to, a letter of Aboriginality signed under the common seal from a recognised incorporated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community organisation such as Land Council or Elders group, Aboriginal Medical Service or a letter on letterhead from a Local Aboriginal Land Council.

About the role

Reporting to the Manager, Indigenous Student Engagement and Success, this position plays a vital role in empowering Indigenous students at Notre Dame. You'll support their educational aspirations and lead initiatives that boost Indigenous participation in higher education making a meaningful impact through outreach, engagement, and student success programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the educational goals of Indigenous students by connecting them to academic and support programs, mentoring opportunities, and contributing positively to a vibrant community life.
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with external partners, students, and internal stakeholders to increase Indigenous student participation in Higher Education and support their success.
  • Undertake special projects related to engagement with external organisations, including planning and collaborating on bespoke orientation activities for Indigenous students.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of practices, operational processes, and the implementation of programs and initiatives that assist Indigenous students in transitioning to university life and study.
  • Undertake student eligibility assessments to provide advice on scholarships, support, and grants.
  • Maintain and draft appropriate documentation for government and university reporting.

Qualifications, skills & experience

  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline, or equivalent education/training and experience.
  • Knowledge of current trends in education and the challenges which students face.
  • Understanding of historical, political, and social factors affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in higher education.
  • Cultural competency and ability to work respectfully with Aboriginal communities.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills to build effective relationships.
  • Excellent organisational, time management, and administrative skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Supportive of the Objects of Notre Dame as a Catholic University.
